At the regional meet my junior year was the only meet of the season that you can qualify for state finals and I was planning on making it with my 4x400 team. We were very close to getting that time and place to make it, but something else happened that was far greater. My 4x800 team pulled the fastest time ever at Mott and we broke the school record and made it to state finals!
The way we accomplished this was totally random. All we set out to do was to stay behind the Walled Lake Western team the whole race and thats exactly what happened. Our previous times werent even close to breaking the school record and we dropped our time that day by 20 seconds.
Our two seniors Zack and Josh pulled out the first two blazing fast splits at about 2 minutes and then they handed it off to Clingan. His split wasnt his fastest about 2:07 but he kept our goal to just stay behind that team. I was super nervous for my leg because I knew we were going blazing fast.
I was up against a huge rival of mine (
Jeremy Auer
) and we sprinted our first leg at 58 seconds or so. I kept up with them for about 600 meters when I hit a brick wall. I still managed to run 60 seconds for a 1:58 800!! That is sick. Speaking of sick... it made me sick. I was puking my guts out trying to celebrate, but I couldnt even find any of my team mates for a while.
This was a life changing event for me because throughout the rest of my running career, I can always look back at this amazing and surprising race.
Its life changing because this is when I truly appreciated running.
